Manhattan’s dining rooms are stage sets first, and this ten walks through the island’s eras. Keens Steakhouse opened in 1885 beside the theaters of Herald Square, the last survivor of that district’s generation, its ceilings hung with some ninety thousand clay pipes once smoked by Babe Ruth and Albert Einstein. Katz’s Delicatessen followed in 1888, when the Lower East Side was the most crowded immigrant quarter on earth. Boucherie West Village inherited the building of the Circle Repertory Theater; Essex took over a century-old winery at Essex Crossing after two decades in the old covered market.
Authorship separates the rest. Artie Cutler built Carmine’s – Time Square on the idea that dinner should feel like an Italian-American wedding feast; the Wetansons, a third generation in, carried the Queens shared-table tradition into Tony’s Di Napoli. STK Steakhouse argues the opposite, trading dark wood and hush for a resident DJ and theatrical lighting. Choose the era you want to spend the evening in — immigrant Manhattan, the Broadway machine, or the candlelit Village of OLIO E PIÙ.

Big tables belong to the family-style halls: Carmine’s – Time Square and Tony’s Di Napoli are built for groups and visiting families racing a curtain. For a program, STK Steakhouse keeps a resident DJ most nights, and Essex turns weekends into a festival with private and semi-private rooms. In warm months the terraces decide — the sidewalk café at Boucherie West Village, the leafy perch of OLIO E PIÙ, the heated decks at Essex. All ten serve into the late evening and work on Sunday; Katz’s Delicatessen and La Pecora Bianca Bryant Park also open early.
The limits, plainly. Four of the ten are Italian and two are steakhouses, so the map tilts toward the shared platter and the chophouse; a French brasserie, a Jewish deli, Up Thai and one contemporary American room balance it. Midtown, the Theater District, the Lower East Side and the Village dominate — Harlem, Chinatown, the Financial District and the Upper West Side are absent, as is tasting-menu fine dining.
