Essex: The Brunch Party That Built a Neighborhood Legend

Before bottomless brunch was a citywide institution, Essex was throwing the original party. A quarter-century on, the Lower East Side veteran still runs weekends like a festival — pitchers of mimosas, tables of friends shouting over each other — while weeknights bring oyster-happy-hour crowds and serious dry-aged steaks. Few rooms cover both ends of a weekend this well.

History

Essex spent its first two decades inside the old Essex Street Market before moving in 2019 into the century-old Schapiro’s winery building at Essex Crossing — a space that once bottled kosher wine and now pours a very different kind of weekend. Through every LES reinvention, the brunch party never stopped.

What to Order

Weekends, it is the Bottomless Brunch: unlimited mimosas, Aperol spritzes, bloody marys and cold beer alongside the brunch plates. Evenings pivot to dry-aged bone-in steaks and wagyu cuts backed by Mediterranean-leaning small plates — kofta meatballs, burrata flatbread, charred vegetables — with an oyster-forward happy hour to open the night. Vegan and gluten-free diners get real choices, not afterthoughts.

The Space

A multi-level industrial-warm room with a mezzanine bar, exposed brick heritage and heated outdoor decks that stretch the season. It scales from date-night corner to full birthday takeover — private and semi-private rooms handle the in-between.

Who It’s For

Brunch crews, birthday squads, happy-hour regulars and anyone who wants Lower East Side energy with an actual kitchen pedigree behind it.

Good to Know

How does bottomless brunch work? Weekends until late afternoon: a set window of unlimited drinks with your meal — come thirsty, book ahead.

Is there a happy hour? Weekday early evenings — oysters and cocktails at their friendliest, ideal before a night out on the LES.

Can a big group book? Yes, the venue is built for it — from semi-private corners to buyouts for milestone parties.

What about vegetarians and vegans? A dedicated and genuinely broad selection, rare for a steak-driven kitchen.

Do I need a reservation for brunch? Strongly advised — prime weekend slots vanish fast, though the bar catches some walk-ins.

    Oh my, what a meal!

My favourites were the chimichurri steak and the calamari.

The honey-apple martinis were also incredible.

Quick service and a lovely atmosphere for a girls' night.

Came here spontaneously, but I'd come again for the service! Helena was wonderful in many ways. I took the 'bottomless' option, and Helena honestly never let me see the bottom of my glass the whole time I was here. She's…

I'm starting this review with the drink, because it truly deserves attention. I ordered the Purple Rose Martini, and it was exceptional — wonderfully balanced, fragrant and honestly one of the best drinks I've had in a l…

  5. Cam

We had brunch here and chose the cheapest option at $47, which included mimosas, an Aperol Spritz, a Bloody Mary and a Narragansett beer. We ordered burgers (one vegan Beyond Burger, one regular). Both were fairly tasty.…
