MCC Theater operates under the guidance of founding Artistic Directors Bob LuPone, Bernie Telsey, and Will Cantler. From its earliest days on 42nd Street, through a lengthy residency at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Greenwich Village, to its recent move to the current multi-venue facility in Hell’s Kitchen, the theater’s mission has always been to provoke discussions that would otherwise never happen. For the artists, this mission has consistently meant creating a comfortable space to discuss new, transformative ideas with an active, dynamic, and open community. Through their work, they’ve discovered newer, more effective ways to fulfill this mission both in their productions and internal operations.

Following a review and discussion of the company’s growth, conducted with staff, management, and board members, Manhattan Class Company embarked on its next phase of development, focusing increasingly on diversification. There are many values that are key to MCC Theater, allowing it to model and stimulate positive change in the theater industry. In recent years, audiences have seen the results of implementing new strategies based on these principles. The team constantly listens to recommendations and wishes from its audience and dedicates its time and resources to implementing the best of what they’ve learned.

A Long Journey of Development in the Theater Industry

In 2017, MCC Theater diversified its programs. Moving forward, the team realized it lacked the necessary tools and infrastructure to effectively support these new initiatives. In response, they engaged experts from the consulting firm Art Equity to expand their cultural competency.

In 2018, a staff working group was established to focus on the insights and experiences of specialists regarding issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and in society. Since then, the group holds weekly meetings and monthly sessions with senior management. After an initial period of adjustment and building trust among stakeholders, the company created a strong foundation for stimulating discussions.

One of the first steps toward development was reviewing hiring practices to ensure the company wasn’t missing out on the best candidates. Thus, during the company’s expansion and move to the new multi-venue complex on West 52nd Street, they began hiring both full-time and part-time employees.

In 2019, the Robert W Wilson MCC Theater Space opened, and the company also participated in the ART/NY Diversifying Our Organizations initiative during this period. This six-month program, led by the Raben Group, included the participation of the board and management and brought Manhattan Class Company closer to its goal of making the new space inclusive, accessible, and anti-racist.

In the spring of 2020, the nationwide discussion about the murder of George Floyd became a catalyst for critical dialogue and self-reflection. The company’s leadership was honoured to briefly open its lobby to provide a resting place for those protesting against racism following Floyd’s death.

Manhattan Class Company presents seasons of bold new plays and musicals created by distinguished playwrights who dare to experiment. The company’s Play Labs allow it to participate in the development process of various projects. As of 2025, MCC Theater has seen over 500 plays staged in the US and around the world.

Annually, the company’s educational programs demonstrate the power of theater to awaken imagination and foster development in over 12,000 high school students across New York’s five boroughs. Partnerships with schools help teaching artists connect with local schools to develop supplemental arts education programs.
