Early Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Veronica Yvette Greenfield, better known as Ronnie Spector, was a celebrated American singer<\/a>. Ronnie was born on August 10, 1943, in East Harlem, to Beatrice and Louis Bennett. She started singing at a young age with her sister Estelle Bennett and her cousin Nedra Talley. Her family encouraged and supported her talent. The girls eventually formed their own group, \u201cthe Darling Sisters,\u201d which was later renamed \u201cthe Ronettes.\u201d The trio performed at school concerts at George Washington High School and at local venues like the \u201cPeppermint Lounge,\u201d which, incidentally, was where go-go dancing and the twist originated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ronettes and First Hits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the early 1960s, the Ronettes started to gain recognition. The girls first signed with the record company \u201cColpix Records\u201d and producer Stuart Phillips, but the collaboration didn\u2019t produce any hits. This led them to sign a new contract with the \u201cPhilles Records\u201d label and producer Harvey Phillip Spector. This collaboration was a huge success, leading to many chart-topping songs. Some of their famous tracks include \u201cDo I Love You?\u201d, \u201cWalking in the Rain,\u201d \u201cBorn to Be Together,\u201d \u201cBe My Baby,\u201d \u201cBaby, I Love You,\u201d and \u201cIs This What I Get for Loving You?\u201d In 1965, the Ronettes were voted the third-best singing group in England, right behind the \u201cRolling Stones\u201d and the \u201cBeatles.\u201d In 1966, they even opened for the Beatles during their tour of the United States. In 1967, the Ronettes broke up, largely because Ronnie married her producer, Harvey Phillip Spector, who restricted her performances and recording sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A New Chapter: Solo Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the 1970s, Ronnie began her solo career, releasing the song \u201cTry Some, Buy Some \/ Tandoori Chicken,\u201d which wasn’t a hit. After her divorce in 1972, she tried to revive the group under the new name \u201cRonnie Spector and the Ronettes,\u201d but it didn’t succeed, and their records didn’t make it onto the charts. In 1980, the singer recorded her first solo album, \u201cSiren.\u201d Her career saw a major comeback when she collaborated with Eddie Money on the song and music video for \u201cTake Me Home Tonight\u201d in 1986. The single broke into the top five of the \u201cBillboard\u201d chart. She later released more albums, including \u201cUnfinished Business,\u201d \u201cSomething’s Gonna Happen,\u201d \u201cLast of the Rock Stars,\u201d and \u201cEnglish Heart.\u201d She also recorded an extended track called \u201cShe Talks to Rainbows.\u201d In 1990, Ronnie Spector published her memoir, \u201cBe My Baby: How I Survived Mascara,\u201d \u201cMiniskirts, and Madness,\u201d \u201cOr, My Life as a Fabulous Ronette.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2010, Ronnie released the Christmas EP \u201cRonnie Spector’s Best Christmas Ever,\u201d on the \u201cBad Girl Sounds\u201d label, which featured five new Christmas songs. In 2011, Spector released her version of Amy Winehouse\u2019s single \u201cBack to Black.\u201d In 2018, the singer also appeared in the musical documentary \u201cAmy Winehouse: Back to Black.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2021, the Ronettes returned to the Top 10 for the first time in 58 years with their recording of \u201cSleigh Ride.\u201d Ronnie Spector passed away on January 12, 2022, at the age of 78.
